Geoff's Blog: Be Professional
Comment on This
Lately I have come across some NON-professional behavior. To me, there is the Pinker Way and the wrong way. Allow me to point out the difference.
Let's take my wife, for example. She is a realtor that helps people buy or sell a house, which in most cases is their single largest asset. Let's say her client put an offer on a piece of property. As most of us know, this is a very emotional experience. She would get a hold of the other agent and ask that they get back to her by the end of the day so that she could report to her client, who is on pins and needles. It cracks me up when the other side doesn't follow through and communicate what is happening. In many cases, people are busy or out of touch.
Communicate that. Be professional. Even if you have nothing to report, report nothing. But the excuse is always something like, "I couldn't get a hold of the person because they are out of town."
You must realize that your conduct matters, always. We are all busy, but you need to communicate and be a pro. How many times have you been left hanging by a boss or a client? If you say, "I will let you know by Thursday," then let the person know something by Thursday, even if you're just letting them know that you may need more time for whatever reason. Be a pro, not a lazy human being. It costs nothing. Believe me when I tell you that people are constantly being judged on how they act, look, and dress.
There is a certain aura you carry around. Make it a professional one.
Have any stories to share about dealing with unprofessional people? Let me know.
